Anggota Keluarga Kerajaan dimakamkan di dalam sebuah ruangan, bukan langsung di bawah tanah. Karena itu, peti mati mereka dilapisi dengan timah untuk memperlambat proses pembusukan. Timah menyegel peti mati dan mencegah kelembaban masuk, sehingga bisa menjaga tubuh tetap utuh hingga satu tahun.

Hal ini juga demi memastikan bahwa bau dan racun apa pun dari mayat tidak dapat keluar peti dan merusak lingkungan.

Ratu Elizabeth dimakamkan di sebuah Royal Vault, semacam brankas kerajaan, di Kastil Windsor, yang menjadi tempat peristirahatan raja-raja sebelumnya. Setelah itu, peti matinya akan dipindahkan ke Kapel Memorial Raja George VI di Kastil Windsor.

Mendiang suaminya, Pangeran Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, pada 2021 lalu juga dimakamkan di peti mati yang dilapisi dengan timah, mengikuti tradisi keluarga kerajaan sejak ratusan tahun lalu.

Adapun, peti mati Ratu Elizabeth II dilaporkan terbuat dari kayu oak, diyakini berasal dari Perkebunan Sandringham di Norfolk, Inggris. Andrew Leverton dari perusahaan pembuat peti mati Leverton & Sons, mengatakan kepada The Times bahwa bahan baku tersebut sangat langka di Inggris, mengingat kayu oak biasanya didatangkan dari Amerika.
